Does putting cut lemons/limes in a vase with flowers make the flowers brown or wilt faster?

I heard that if you cut up lemons, limes or oranges and put them into the flower water of an arrangement it will make the flowers wilt and brown within hours. Yet I see this done in magazines and tv shows all the time. Any florists or botany people out there that can give me the true answer? Wedding centerpieces count on your knowledge!
