How can You tell if the watermelon is ripe enough ?

Question by Brittany: How can You tell if the watermelon is ripe enough ?
I have heard from people that if you knock on the waermelon and if it is hollow its a ripe watermelon. But I really hate it when you spend like five bucks on a watermelon and it does not taste good. Does anyone know how to determine a reallly goood watermelon is there a secret or is it just unpredictable?

Usually if they’re in season, they’re definitely going to be ripe.. well, most of them. I’m not sure if the knocking trick works? I know people look ridiculous in the grocery store doing it, though. You’re safer to buy half a watermelon which has one side already exposed and determining your decision on looks rather than sound. :)

Tapping and listening for hollowness is the only way I know of. When a watermelon is really ripe you can smell it through the rind.

just carry around a little pocket knife and try em out

Before the seedless watermelon came out, you could SHAKE a watermelon…if you could hear the seeds rattling, that meant the melon was ready to be cut open.

You are right about knocking on it.

Also, as with most fruit, if you can find one that is relatively heavy for its size. Don’t worry if you see a slight indentation, or a yellow look, or scarring on the outside. That means nothing.

Don’t buy a watermelon out of season. they are awful.
