Why Adding Watermelon To Your Diet Is A Smart Choice

Watermelon contains a high concentrate of Lycopene, a natural antioxidant that may help to reduce the risk of bladder, cervix, lung and skin cancers.

Adding it to your diet is really easy. Use it as a snack, an appetizer or incorporate Watermelon into your summertime beverages. Since Watermelon is fat-free and low in calories, it makes it an ideal food for those who are watching their weight.

During the Summertime, I like to make cold beverages using Watermelon. Here are a few of my family’s favorite beverage recipes.

Watermelon Punch

6 c. watermelon juice
2 c. pineapple juice
1 (12 oz) can frozen raspberry flavored juice
1 (6 oz) can frozen orange juice concentrate
1/4 c. lemon juice

In a large bowl, blend all of the above ingredients. Chill for 2 hours. Makes 14 (3/4 cup) servings.

Watermelon Smoothie

2 c. seeded watermelon chunks
1 c. crushed or cracked ice
1/2 c. plain yogurt
1 to 2 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/8 tsp. almond extract

Whip ingredients together in blend until smooth. Serve immediately. Makes 2-3 servings.

Watermelon Frappe

1/2 large watermelon
36 ozs. Ginger Ale
1 (12 ounce) can frozen limeade concentrate, thawed
Lime & Lemon Slices (fresh & sliced)

Remove seeds and rinds from watermelon. Cut melon into chunks. Combine melon, limeade and ginger ale in blender. Freeze for several hours. Thaw partially to serve. Spoon into tall glasses and garnish with lime or lemon slices. Makes 1 gallon.

Watermelon Guava Smoothie

1 1/2 cups watermelons
1 cup guava juice or guava nectar
1-2 cup ice

Mix the above ingredients together in your blender and blend until smooth. Serve in chilled glasses.

(Sixth in a Series)

Major U.S. Industry

Weight loss publishing is a $1.3 billion a year U.S. industry. This should tell you that you would not have the tiniest of troubles finding books on the subject.

Bookstores have giant sections for diet and weight loss; magazine and newspaper ads sell them mercilessly; there are probably thousands of websites devoted to the subject, each promoting some book or system or other. Attend a book fair, toss a tennis ball in any direction, and chances are it will hit a new diet book book representative, and bounce onto another.

The words “densely populated” come to mind. And the problem, of course, is how to choose the book that is right for you.

The Shortest Book

The shortest (and truest) diet book would read (in its entirety):

Burn more calories than you consume. The End.

An expanded edition may carry this appendix:

The First Law of Thermodynamics

The increase in the internal energy of a system is equal to the amount of energy added by heating the system, minus the amount lost as a result of the work done by the system on its surroundings.

Which in plain language says that you provide heat (calories) to your system (body) through food, you lose energy (calories) by work done. If you add more heat to the system than you lose as a result of work, you increase the internal “energy” which the body stores for future use, usually as fat. If your body uses more energy than it consume, you will burn these stores, and lose weight.

But even this expanded version would be too short; people would not want to pay $25 a copy.

Fad Books

Knowing that the only law at work in weight loss is the First Law of Thermodynamics, and knowing that you can’t sell that over and over, and certainly not for $25 each time, there’s an army of devoted “diet specialists” of varying degrees of authenticity out there working very hard devising new angles and renditions of the same subject.

Hence the string of fads diets that seem to mushroom whenever you turn around: “Cabbage Soup Diet,” “The Lazy Zone Diet,” “The South Beach Diet,” “The Chocolate Diet,” “Atkins Diet,” “Scarsdale Diet Plan,” “Amputation Diet,” “The 3 Day Diet,” “7 Day All You Can Eat Diet,” “Lemonade Diet,” “The Hollywood Diet,” “Russian Air Force Diet,” “Grape Fruit Diet,” and on and on and on ad infinitum.

I think that many of these fads are taken to heart by people who need new topics of conversation more than anything else. And it also strikes me that people as a rule seem to dislike simple, and seem to like—if not demand—complicated. Fad books meet that demand by tending to make the simple subject of weight loss complicated.

Intention

So, in this sea of books and systems, how do you tell the good (really wanting to help) book from the bad (just out to make a quick million bucks)? Ultimately, no one but you can answer that question, but whatever answer you arrive at, you should base it on the author’s intention.

With your BS antennae fully extended and finely tuned, read the sleeves and introduction of the book to get a sense of where the writer is coming from. Does smugness and self-importance seem to be a big thing with this person, or is he or she just too darn slick or smooth for comfort?

Be aware that some variations on the First Law of Thermodynamics are definitely more equal than others.

Variations that tell you how easy and painless it is to shed a hundred or so pounds are not being honest. Put the book back. Variations that offers money back guarantees every second or so paragraph are probably selling snake oil. Variations that tell you that you don’t actually have to cut your calories, it’s all in your head, or that you don’t have to exercise, it’s still all in your head, should have to write the First Law of Thermodynamics a hundred thousand times on the blackboard. Put the book back.

Honesty

Books that point out the first (and only) principle of weight loss: Burn more calories than you consume, are starting out right. And if they go on to tell you that this is not going to be easy, and that you will have to really commit to this and probably work your butt off to get somewhere, now you are dealing with someone honest. Give this book due consideration.

And if you get the sense that this writer truly has your best interests at heart (without causing as much as a ripple in your BS antennae); give him or her due consideration.

Pudding Proof

Of course, the proverbial proof is in the pudding. If the book or system you have chosen leads toward your goal, week after week, month after month, and you feel better and better, lither and lither, happier and happier: well done, you have made a good choice.

The multiTRIM Diet

All diet plans—except for the outright fraudulent ones, and be warned: they abound—have only one goal: for you to burn more calories than you consume.

Possibly the most sensible plan we have seen in recent years is the multiTRIM diet which supplies all needed nutrients to maintain health while easing hunger in a fifteen calories meal-replacement drink.

A multiTRIM Journal

A friend recently set out to shed 143 pounds over 18 months with the help of the multiTRIM diet. The blog-record of her journey can be found here.

A safe healthy diet for teens to lose weight and keep it off is one of the easiest weight loss plans to achieve success with.

Teenagers are a special group amongst folks who want to lose weight and keep it off.

Their physiology is geared toward weight loss. This is especially true when comparing their age group to other groups such as adults in the prime of their lives or senior citizens.

Teen Weight Loss

Teenagers are going through a tremendous period of growth that requires a large amount of food energy to sustain. Therefore, teens need not diet per se, and should not restrict their food intake below what their growing bodies need.

Rather, they only have to curb their caloric intake so their body uses the energy they have stored as fat to fuel their growth spurts.

Such a plan may realistically result in them maintaining their weight for an extended period of time as their body replaces girth from fat reserves with height and additional muscle mass.

The end result is an adult with a well-proportioned body at the height their genetic makeup determines it should be.

Raw Vegetable Diet

The best and easiest way to achieve this goal is to adopt a diet centered on raw vegetables and fresh fruit.

Such a healthy diet plan gives a teenager the enzymes and nutrients found in raw foods as they come from nature.

Additionally, a raw vegetable and fresh fruit eating plan supplies large amounts of food to satisfy the teen’s ravenous hunger while requiring additional energy from their fat reserves to process those raw foods.

But why would a raw vegetable and fresh fruit diet help burn fat?

It’s because these foods, especially the raw vegetables, usually require more energy to digest than they supply. Therefore, there is a caloric deficit produced by consuming raw foods, which burn fat while giving the body vital enzymes and nutrients that would have been destroyed by cooking, freezing, or canning.

Easy Beneficial Diet

A raw vegetable based diet offers a teenager an opportunity to lose weight safely and easily while getting the vital nutrients their rapidly growing body needs. The end result is a well-proportioned, strong adult who is used to eating the foods their body needs to function correctly.

Such a diet plan for teens is actually a great diet plan for anyone at any age. It is the type of healthful diet foods we should all be consuming on a daily basis.

The presence of the gastric juices help in digesting the food. If the hydrochloric acid present in the stomach increases in quantity, the condition is known as hyperacidity. A gastritis diet is really important for individuals to be able to deal with their symptoms. Many individuals with gastritis experience more than average saliva, bad breath, coated tongue, extremely bad taste in the mouth, mental depression, significantly reduced urination, and an overall feeling of being uneasy. It usually worsens with stress, alcohol, chemicals, surgeries, severe injury or illness. In a worse case scenario, it can cause severe intestinal bleeding.

Gastritis is more common with age and most sufferers complain of indigestion. Other people have no noticeable symptoms, which can be dangerous if gastritis is caused by erosion of the stomach lining with bleeding-normally a result of aspirin or other medication. Recommended foods for individuals with gastritis include eating foods high in antioxidants like fruits and vegetables. Particular fruits and vegetables include bell peppers, tomatoes, cherries, blueberries, and squash. Foods high in calcium and B-vitamins are also recommended. Other reasons to cause this condition include traumatic injury, severe infections, major surgery or even burns. Some disease like anemia, chronic reflux and auto immune disorders have also caused this condition.

Gastritis diet treatment: this should be undertaken under the supervision of an expert. It is recommended that the patient be kept on a fast for 2-3 days. During this time warm water to drink often is advised. Once the toxins have eases, a fruit diet is advised wherein the patient consumes only fruit for three days. Most elderly people hardly get enough of calcium. The elderly require at least 1,500 mg of calcium per day. Many of the elderly avoid drinking milk out of fear that it might upset their digestive processes. If you are averse to milk, you could use nonfat milk powder instead of milk. You can also obtain the calcium you require from foods such as low-fat cheese, broccoli, and yogurt.People who are excessively obese and want to shed these excess pounds sometimes opt for gastric surgery. This is called gastric bypass where the stomach is made inherently smaller so as to contain a lesser amount of food. With time, this is meant to result in drastic weight loss.

Purpose of diet is to fulfill all nutritional needs of the patient in accordance to individual capacity to absorption. Diets of full nutritional value avoiding mechanical irritants are the best recommendation for this situation. Gastritis is generally preventable in the same way that most stomach-related ailments are preventable: by eating right and living a healthy lifestyle. Smoking, excess alcohol and caffeine can all damage your stomach lining and cause gastritis. For temporary, mild gastritis, taking an antacid such as Maalox and Tylenol, then eating no solid foods for a day is often enough to solve it. This gives the stomach a chance to rest and recuperate. After a day of liquids only, add mild, bland food such as bananas, rice and toast to your diet.

What is a typical American diet?

1. Too many calories

A typical American dieter eats more than he/she needs that decreases the function of spleen and stomach in food absorption due to prolong period of congestion.

2. Too much unsaturated fat and trans fat

Too much unsaturated fat from meats, trans fat, fried and junk foods increase bad cholesterol ( LDL) and decreases level of good cholesterol (HDL), leading to cholesterol and triglycerides accumulated in the arteries that block the blood transportation. According to TCM, those oily and greasy foods are yang pathogen and hot in nature, they causes weight gain and increases function of stomach in food digestion, thus affecting spleen in qi absorption.

3. Sugar sweetener, artificial ingredients and beverages

Sugar and sweetener is extreme yin pathogen and cold in nature. As the body moister is dried up caused extreme yang due to intake of meats and oily foods for prolong period of time, intake of extreme cold foods cause heat building up, leading to symptoms of dry-heat that effects the Spleen function in energy distribution.

4. Low vegetables and fruits

Vegetables and fruits, most of them are considered yin pathogen and cool in nature, low vegetables and fruits diet can not counter the extreme yang accumulated in the body.

III. How raw food diet increases energy for a typical American dieter in TCM perspective

Spleen is defined as organ responsible for absorption and transportation of energy (nutrients)

to every cells and organ in the body after food being digested in stomach. In TCM, the typical American diet causes yin deficiency, it reduces the level of moister of the spleen and stomach that is necessary for natural function of both organs in food absorption, leading to constipation and decreasing the energy generation.

Raw food diet is yin pathogen and cool in nature, by switching to raw food diet, it in turn slowly decreases the excessive yang and reduces the heat due to dryness in the body that help to improve water distribution of kidney in moistening the Spleen and stomach, thus increasing the ability of Spleen in qi absorption and energy distribution.

http://overcomeinfertility-tcm.blogspot.com/

To download the endometriosis FREE e book or other health articles and series, please visit http://medicaladvisorjournals.blogspot.com/

The adage in computer language “Garbage in… Garbage out” is relevant to the food we take. We get energy to do work by assimilating the good we consume. We are spending energy every second to breathe, walk, stand and even to think. The quality of food we consume, our mood and time taken, play important role in determining our health, energy levels and happiness. Therefore, look closely at different types of food and the effect they produce on us. The food we take can be divided into five categories:

(i) Biogenic foods: They contain life generating forces and are used for detoxifying the body, e.g. sprouted seeds, sprouted grains, fresh fruit and raw vegetables and juices.

(ii) Whole grains, bread, cereals, cooked vegetables etc.

(iii) Milk and milk products.

(iv) Acid forming food: Meat, sugars, starches, eggs. These foods burden the body with excessive acidity and cause irritability.

(v) Processed food: Tinned, frozen heavily processed foods, refined and concentrated foods. These have little nutrients and are considered responsible for development of disease.

The first two categories of foods — biogenic and vegetarian food – are easy to digest and can cater to body’s requirement for energy. These food items have all the nutrients needed for body’s repair and renewal. The other categories of food have less nutrients and are consumed more for taste than for nutritional value. These food items leave a residue of toxic wastes in the body after digestion and become source for diseases. Therefore, restrict food items to the extent possible.

Our diet normally contains a number of biostatic and bio-acidic foods (e.g. meat, fish) and heavily processed foods (e.g. tinned/frozen, refined foods). These food items decrease our vitality, makes our body susceptible to early aging and disease. The average diet also contains excessive fat and sugar. These items contribute to the accumulation of wastes in tissues which impair cellular nutrition and encourage formation of something like sludge in the blood stream that impedes good circulation. Consequently, our body is burdened with excessive acidity, irritability and flabbiness. It is therefore, not surprising that about half of us have stomach troubles at some time or other and millions have recurrent health problems. To get relief from the problems many of us take laxatives, antacids and other drugs. Excessive dependence on drugs can do more harm than good. Therefore, be more concerned about the food you take and its effect on the body.

Meat Myth: The idea that we need meat to stay healthy is untrue. Meat, fish, poultry products have animal facts concentrated form and it is difficult to assimilate. On the other hand, a mixed diet of roots, grains, vegetables, fruits — all in minimally processed form — are better source of quality protein and it is easier to digest. It is better to avoid these categories of food or consume in small quantities, i.e. about half pound a week.

Too much fat dulls the brain: It has been established that when someone eats a meal with high content of fats, the fats form a film around red blood cells and encourages them to stick together or form clump. This clumping causes small capillaries to clog and as a result about 20% normal blood circulation is lost. Consequently, the oxygen available for our cells is reduced by about 30%. Too much fats in diet interfere with the clarity of mind.

Reduce coffee: Coffee contains caffeine and it is a drug. It stimulates central nervous system, pancreas, heart and cerebral cortex and that is why when you drink coffee you feel temporarily more alert. Every time you drink a coffee you are getting about 100 mg. of caffeine (ordinary tea yields 40-60 mg.). In case you drink 2-8 cups a day the dosage could be dangerous. Caffeine has been shown to affect the heart causing it to beat rapidly and irregularly. It can also increase the level of free fatty acids in your blood, stimulate secretion of excess acid in the stomach and raise blood pressure. Recent studies have shown habitual coffee drinking may lead to certain mental illness like depression and anxiety neurosis. Therefore, cut down intake of coffee.

Learning to eat sensibly is the first step towards achieving health and happiness. Consume balanced diet, eliminate causes of indigestion and cultivate healthy food habits. Then it will be easier to find happiness.

Balanced diet: To supply all the nutrients needed by the body, have a general idea of what constitutes a balanced diet.

Quantum of food consumed (percentage of food taken)

Food items

50%

Carbohydrates such as rice, whole grain, bread cereals, simple sugars not to exceed 10%

30-35%

Fats, e.g. eggs, butter, cheese

15-20%

Protein, e.g. dairy products, meat

Further, to keep the body in good shape, we need to take 8 glasses of water and consume at least 50 gms. of fibre every day.

Causes of indigestion: It takes about five hours for digestion of food in the stomach. Eating in between meals and at frequent intervals or taking snacks etc., causes strain on digestive processes and results in indigestion.

Eating and drinking together. When liquids are drunk at the same time as food is eaten it means that digestive juices are diluted and their potency diminishes.

Eating acid fruits and starchy foods together.

Dietary guide lines:

(i) Avoid distractions during meals, i.e, reading,, T.V. viewing, arguments etc. Eat slowly. Never hurry through a meal and masticate your food as thoroughly as possible. Spend about 20-30 minutes for each meal.

(ii) Always come to a meal when you are hungry. If appetite is lacking don’t try to “coax” it by means of dainty tit bits, relishes etc. Miss a meal or two or take only fruit diet, until real appetite returns.

(iii) Never eat to repletion. Always leave the table feeling that you could eat more and leave a quarter of stomach empty. Do not sit down to a meal feeling worried, over-excited, tired or in a bad temper.

(iv) Over eating is the principal cause for obesity. The overweight are prone to many complaints: disease of liver, kidneys and heart.

(v) Increase intake of fruits and vegetables: They are valuable sources of vitamins and minerals. These items contain fiber (plant cellulose), assist in keeping the intestinal tract moist and help in elimination.

(vi) Alcohol: This provides higher number of calories and few nutrients. Moderation would be helpful.

(vii) Our body requires about 45 nutrients to maintain good health. It is not possible to keep track of even a fraction of these nutrients. Therefore, eat a variety of foods. It is also a good idea to eat as much fresh foods as possible and avoid processed, tinned foods.

The old saying – we are what we eat — is true. Many of our health problems could be linked to the food we take; very often we hurry through our meals, triggering indigestion. Therefore, to improve your health and happiness, be little more concerned about the food you take and make wise choices everyday.

WARNING: FAT IS HARMFUL TO OUR BODY. LOSE YOUR WEIGHT

www.fatloss4.webs.com/

Detoxification has many forms and alludes to numerous programs that clean the body of toxins. Today, the water we drink is laden with chemicals foreign to our system. Our environment is toxic and the foods we eat, even the air we breathe are laced with some kind of toxin that may be hazardous to our health in the future. This is partly due to the advances we have made as a society. We are able to lengthen the shelf life of food but in doing so; we add a chemical that may have side effects like encouraging obesity. Carbon emissions from cars and factories affect our digestive and respiratory system making them more susceptible to illnesses. As a result, everyone is undergoing a form of detoxification to maintain life and health. Although fundamental detoxification begins with diet, detox programs may include nutritional reinforcement for the liver, lungs, kidneys, bowels and blood.
Detox diet recipes help the body to eliminate toxins in many ways. First, natural vegetarian diets include the fiber needed for stimulating regular bowel movement. Detox diet recipes also contain the best possible amounts of vitamins that nourish and foster the bowels and the liver, and other eliminative organs. Detox diet recipes also include a valuable source of enzymes. The elimination of meat from the diet for a short period strengthens detoxification because meat is so hard to digest and needs many enzymes for its digestion. Therefore, vegetarian diets are cleansing diets and aid the body in elimination of toxins.
Diets are very essential and are usually the baseline for any detox program, whether it is herbs, cleansing or other detox programs. Detox diets will generally subtract trigger foods that cause many problems with digestion and elimination. Foods like dairy (milk, cheese) and wheat (glutens) are often the roots of allergies. Sugar is eliminated due to its “empty calories” and may produce hypoglycemia. Meats are eliminated because they contain hormones, antibiotics and other items that are difficult to digest. Caffeine is to be avoided because it too has many ill effects on the body’s digestion. Refined, processed and junk foods are also absent for any detox program to work.
A sample of detox diet recipe is the fruit diet which consists of eating certain types of fruits for a period of time. For breakfast, one can eat as much melons as they would want to whether it be cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon or gala. The lunchtime meal could be grapefruits, oranges or pineapples but these fruits shouldn’t be mixed. Eat till you feel satisfied. At 4 pm, have a large glass of freshly pressed carrot juice. Dinner time, you can eat apples, pears, grapes or bananas which may be eaten one fruit at a time and eaten until hunger is satisfied. This type of detox diet recipe is good for detoxification and losing weight but it is a type of diet that may make you weak so try to conserve energy and do not over exert yourself physically.
Detox diet recipes are just one phase of the program in cleansing your body. Once cleansed, a program of rebuilding and strengthening your body and mind must be made, done, and continually monitored to achieve its affect of a longer and healthier life.

In a vegan lifestyle, there is a strong goal that one should succeed, but they are often lost in nutritional issues. It’s just normal to be confused with this because there is a lot of conflicting information booming from everywhere. But we should realize that we have to a bit creative to see what will be most suitable for us. Well most people have found the following diet more suitable for them:

1. Cut-out all foods that have additives and preserving chemicals. Instead you should just munch on fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts

2. Cut-out starches or gluten. If you are still on a diet of bread, try those who are made from whole grains. Some bakeries can sell you whole grain breads. Also, yams are far better than potatoes.

3. Try vegetable salads of different varieties

4. Cut-out sugar in your meals. Too much sugar in the body can lead to health problems. If you are craving for sugar, make an effort to balance the meal by adding essential fat everyday such as olive oils or fish oils.

5. Have a moderate exercise regimen. Food is part of our health. If you really want overall wellness, you should go out and move your stagnant body. You can do some weight lifting, push-ups, pull-ups, and gym exercises. You can also take yoga classes and other forms of meditation to relieve stress and acquire peace of mind.

6. Avoid meals that are composed of fruits alone. Though, a vegan lifestyle is also composed of fruits, eating fruits alone is not usually beneficial to most people. You may experience some problems such as significant weight loss, dental plaques, mental and emotional imbalances and many more. You should take note that there is no such thing as 100 percent fruit diet. You should take a complete set of meals with vegetables and grains.

7. Consume a lot of green leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, broccoli, and celery. These vegetables are a high source of minerals, proteins and some nutrients. Once you start eating more vegetables, you wellness will improve significantly. You should make a habit to add green vegetables with every meal. Sea vegetables such as weeds, kelp, dulse and nori are very nutritious.

8. Drink fruit and vegetable juice. Purchase a juicer rather than buying canned juices. You can take juice of kale, spinach or celery at least 8 ounce every day. This will better alkalinize the body.

9. Do not be very conscious with your diet. If you are talking about it all the time, the people around you will likely to get sick of hearing about it. Not all people will agree with your beliefs. A vegan lifestyle is not a religion or any mysticism.

10. Follow the diet. If there is one aspect where you should not sacrifice, it is your vegan diet. Cut-out all animal products including dairy, milk and other products that are tested on animals. Also cut-out meat such as chicken, fish and seafood. Meat is normally contaminated with various hormones, chemicals, bacteria and metals. Also, meat can also contain saturated fat which can increase the risk for heart diseases, cancer, eye problems and other diseases. The mass raising of animals on farm consumes large amounts of energy resources, such as land, water and it plays a major role in destroying the environment.

Raising animals just to satisfy our cravings is a cruel thing. Being a vegan is a vow against this inhumanity. The best way to start changing the world is to begin with yourself.

A balanced vegetarian diet is always a good idea. This allows you to not miss out on any essential nutrients that you might have missed since you are not consuming meats and dairy. They can be added into casseroles, stews, and other dishes. You can choose to jazz up your balanced vegetarian diet with cheese, nuts, or other fresh vegetables.Following a balanced vegetable diet can be quite hard and one of the reasons may be some people who are following this often find difficulty in creating meals that they can stick with and enjoy.
