Question by oheyy: How would strawberries do in a window box?
I live in NH and am currently growing some herbs (basil, parsley, oregano) in a window box, and wanted to do some other edibles too like strawberries. My only real concern is whether the roots would have enough depth to grow well, anyone have any tips on growing these guys? I was going to transfer a plant from a hanging pot from a store, any tips on feeding, proper soil drainage, watering, and root depth especially are much appreciated!

Best answer:

Answer by jamesbergen50
If you have rich soil. Some varieties do well hanging up side down. Drill some 3/4 inch holes in the bottom of the planter, And herbs on top. Rich soil.and feed well, water regular. Tomatoes do well at this to. Hanging varieties. Check a seed catalog for these. Strawberry’s take 2 years to produce berry’s. Buy a soil water monitor, and plant food, nutrients. Not fertilizer.

Question by John: If a watermelon and a grape were in outer space, would the grape orbit around the watermelon?
And would the watermelon create gravity? If there were little specks of paper would they fall towards the watermelon’s surface?

Best answer:

Answer by Andrew S
Possibly. The thing is that the objects are so small that the gravity created by them is going to be minuscule. With the grape and watermelon they would have to be almost an infinite distance away from anything else so that they were not disturbed. The grape would have to travel so slowly as to appear stationary with respect to the watermelon even when viewed over a period of months. Any faster than that and it will be faster than the minuscule escape velocity of the watermelon.

Question by concerned_earthling: How would you prune an orange to get it to produce the most oranges?
We live in the foothills out side Sacramento California and have three orange trees one tangerine and one lemon.
I would like to know how to prune the orange trees so that they produce more oranges.
The lemon tree might produce more lemons than the three orange trees produce oranges and the tangerine does not seem to produce any tangerines.*(this is the first year in many that it has had any and they are small even for a tangerine)

Best answer:

Answer by Dragon
No need to prune citrus trees at all. If your trees are young they may need some extra time to mature to a good size for fruiting. If they are full size then they are not happy. Citrus are gross feeders. They like regular fertilizing and lots of water. If they are flowering and not setting fruit, this can be caused by lack of water. they actually set a minute fruit but if water is not available at the right time they throw the fruit off. If you provide sun, food and water you should be right. You can also buy fertilizers to encourage fruiting, but a good citrus food should be all you need.

Question by lurobs3: Would it be profitable to grow pomegranates on 3 acres of land?
We have three acres of land, that we would like to farm. We are interested in pomegranates.

Best answer:

Answer by Michael L
You have to answer some questions. How close can pomegranates be grown together. This will tell you how many trees you can have in yoru grove.

You will also have to check on climates that are best and soil composition that is best for pomegranates. costs of fertilizers and irrigation if it is not readily available or if you have to pay for water. As well as how long will trees have to grow before bearing fruit. It could be years. Then how many fruit per tree and the cost of harvesting them, and bringing them to market.

Then you will have to guess on the demand and price for pomegranets years in the future. Unlike crops, once you plant a tree you can not change what type of fruit it bears, where crops can be changed and rotated in a field. Three acres doesn’t sound like a lot of land to grow fruit trees on it. You might be better off using the land for a crop that can produce money now. Then plant a few tress at a time allowing them to mature while you still plant a cash crop.

Just some random thoughts. From someone who is not a farmer.

What do you think? Answer below!

Pomegranate “Treat” [Day 2/7]
The theme for today was treat.

Pomegranates are such a treat. They’re tasty and gorgeous.
They’re my treat for today.

Also, I’ve been introduced to "Glee" and OH MY OH MY!–I love it.
I was skeptical to start in on watching it. It looked kinda iffy on my I’m-so-totally-gonna-love-this-o-meter…
But I was wrong. I am SO enjoying it.
That’s my other "treat" of the day!
