Why do my lemons mold faster when i place them in a bowl with other fruits?

When i leave the lemons in a bowl all by there lonesome they last for about a week. However, whenever i put the lemons in a bowl, most of the time some one will put oranges and bananas (cause that’s about the only fruits y family eats) in the bowl. In less than 2 days the lemons will me squishy and moldy. Somebody please explain!

  1. Peter S Says:

Ethene is a gas of the formula CH2-CH2, produced by fruit as a hormone to speed ripening of fruits. This explains why some fruits ripen faster if they are stored in a plastic bag. It is used commercially in very small amounts to speed fruit ripening after harvesting.

This is produced by the oranges and bananas and the lemons ripen very quickly.
